In the Weeds: The Conundrum of Marijuana

The legalization of marijuana has left many mental health professionals concerned and perplexed.  Specifically, how changes in legislation impact practice.  This course begins with an overview of the health risks and medicinal value associated with the use of marijuana. Participants will examine the history of marijuana legislation and implications for policy and programs.  Participants will discuss treatment strategies and ethical issues pertaining to adolescent, adult, and maternal use of marijuana.  Thought-provoking activities serve to offer clinicians some clarity for practice settings.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify potential risks/benefits as well as signs/symptoms of marijuana use
  • Discuss the current legal status of marijuana in NJ and ethics regarding mandated reporting
  • Analyze policy and treatment implications regarding marijuana use by clients and/or staff
  • Summarize strategies to address marijuana use with special populations
