Ethical Practice and Considerations for LGBTQ+ Clients

“Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” represent more than buzz words for mental health professionals. In order to serve the LGBTQ+ community effectively, mental health professionals need to understand the historical and contemporary ethical landscape that impact mental health; care seeking behaviors; and treatment outcomes. This workshop begins with a brief review of sexual orientation and gender diversity. Participants will examine the intersection of personal values and professional obligations. Activities will guide participants through the various levels and manifestations of anti-LGBTQ+ attitudes and policies, including provider bias, followed by a discussion of ethical considerations when working with the LGBTQ+ community. Participants will then review case studies featuring various ethical conflicts and dilemmas that can arise when working with LGBTQ+ clients. The workshop will close with ethical guidelines for best practices in the care of the LGBTQ+ community.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Explain the impact of anti LGBTQ+ laws on treatment
• Define terms related to LGBTQ+ bias and oppression
• Identify behaviors, practices, and policies that that impact the ethical treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals seeking and
  receiving treatment
• Identify best practices and ethical standards for working with LGBTQ+ individuals
