What is a Kansa?

In WUKF (World Union of Karate-Do Federations) karate competitions, a “Kansa” referee is a technical referee responsible for timing the match and verifying information for the central referee. They also play a crucial role in ensuring that the competition is fair and accurate, in accordance with WUKF rules.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown of their responsibilities:

Technical Referee:

The Kansa referee focuses on the technical aspects of the match, ensuring proper timing and accurate recording of events.

Timekeeping:

They are responsible for accurately measuring the time during the bout.

Information Verification:

The Kansa referee provides information to the central referee (Sushin) to assist in decision-making.

Fairness:

Their role significantly contributes to the overall fairness and accuracy of the competition.

Additionally, the Kansa referee can act as a mirror referee if requested.
