Understanding Substance Use Through a Family Systems Lens

Family Therapy, particularly with addicted family systems, can present challenges that require unique interventions. This workshop will help advance practicing clinicians to identify multiple levels of intervention within the Ecological Paradigm. This workshop encourages clinicians to view substance use as one of the many imbalances of power and to expand their lens by tracking and mapping the substance use symptoms in the family by using Genograms. Participants will examine the imbalance of power by looking at the interplay between individuals, families, and their communities. Interventions presented are applicable to various family systems so practitioners may approach their clients from a renewed knowledge base.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the key component of the Ecological Paradigm model
  • Discuss the kaleidoscope of seven lenses
  • List a minimum of three vertical and horizontal stressors
  • Apply a timeline to current cases discussed
  • Summarize a minimum of two narrative reframing approaches
