Psychopharmacology for Adults & Children: What Clinicians Need to Know

The use of psychotropic medication is a treatment modality that must be initiated with great care, particularly with children and adolescents.  This training is designed to provide a basic overview of commonly prescribed psychotropic medications used to treat different behavioral health disorders in adults and children. All medications will be discussed in terms of the benefits and cautions associated with different medication classes. Information is presented in such a way that attendees need not have extensive experience with pharmacology.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Compare the use of anti-depressants and stimulants with adults versus children
  • Identify three classes of medications used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • List anxiolytic alternatives to benzodiazepine use in adults and children
  • Summarize benefits, side-effects and precautions for medications used to treat behavioral health conditions
