LGBTQ+ Culturally Competent Care

Cultural competency is the ability of individual providers and institutions to meet client needs by acknowledging diversity, understanding and incorporating client’s cultural values. This workshop begins with an overview of the basic stages of sexual development, and the various identities within the LGBTQ community by way of the sexuality spectra. The workshop will examine the bio-psycho-social health trends within the LGBTQ+ community. In order to identify actions and policies that either hinder or facilitate culturally competent practices regarding their LGBTQ+ clients, this workshop will guide participants through the competency continuum, ranging from cultural destructiveness to cultural proficiency, and explore the building blocks of cultural competency such as cultural sensitivity, and cultural humility.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Outline the stages of sexual development and components of human sexuality.
• Summarize the prevalence of mental and social health issues affecting sexual minorities
• Describe prevalence and impact of provider bias with respect to LGBTQ+ clients
• Identify & define the different stages in the cultural competency continuum
• Identify best strategies to increase quality of care for LGBTQ+ people in the treatment setting.
