Navigating a Life of Trauma*

Traumatic events can leave scars that run deep and impact development across the lifespan. Since responses to trauma are unique, clinicians often wonder how to address this safely. This course provides an overview of the ACES study and assessment tool. Participants will consider development from a trauma perspective and the potential for developing substance use disorders. Participants will also examine their own trauma informed aptitude. The 5 Core Values of a Trauma Informed System of Care will be presented through case study. This will serve to identify any modifications clinicians may need to make in treatment, the environment or approach. Course concludes with a discussion about self-care.

*This course is presented in 2 modules. Participants must attend BOTH days to be eligible for CE's.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

•  Identify the various impacts of trauma throughout the lifespan

•  Discuss substance use disorders as part of a trauma informed approach

•  Apply a trauma informed approach to the screening, assessment and intervention process

•  Incorporate grounding techniques for triggers

•  Apply the 5 Core Values of Trauma Informed Care

•  Summarize the need for self-care in a trauma informed system
