Ethical Aspects of Trauma and Substance Use Treatment*
Due to the highly emotional nature of treating substance use disorders and trauma, clinicians require the ability to recognize and respond objectively to ethical dilemmas that emerge in treatment. Numerous codes of ethical conduct exist to guide clinicians from various counseling professions. However, there are also many variables that need to be considered when identifying an ethical plan of action. In this course, clinicians will examine legal constraints, obligations and potential options from a trauma informed perspective. Clinicians will also examine their own reactions to situations so they can evaluate ethically challenging scenarios. Although this course addresses ethical and legal issues specific to substance use and trauma, the ethical principles are applicable to many populations and settings.
*This course is presented in 2-modules, participants must attend BOTH days to be eligible for CE's.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Discuss ethical responsibilities
• Identify common factors that increase risk of legal or disciplinary involvement when working with clients
with a history or trauma and/or SUD
• Describe the added impact of trauma and/or SUD on several common clinical and ethical situations.
• List strategies to work through and resolve ethical dilemmas through a trauma-focused lens
• Recognize the impact of vicarious trauma and the importance of self-care.
Presenter: Ana Guerra, LCSW, LPC, LCADC, CCS
Ms. Guerra, is a seasoned mental health professional with extensive experience in mental health and substance use disorders. She specializes in the treatment of Co-Occurring Disorders and Trauma. Ms. Guerra parlayed her clinical experience into a career as an adjunct/faculty member for various colleges and universities in NJ. She proposed, developed the curriculum and taught the Substance Use Disorder courses at Kean University’s Social Work Department. Ms. Guerra teaches across the Bachelor and Master level curriculum in Social Work and Addiction Studies. Ms. Guerra facilitates training and consultation for various mental health, substance use and academic settings. She also maintains a private practice.Ms. Guerra was selected by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) to serve on the National Taskforce Committee to develop CSWE’s Substance Use Curricular Guide which was published in 2020. Ms. Guerra is approved by the Addiction Professionals Certification Board of NJ (APCBNJ) to teach initial and re-certification L/CADC courses. In 2021, Ms. Guerra was approved by the APCBNJ as a Mandatory Legal Class Trainer; then in 2022, the NJ Alcohol & Drug Counselor Committee approved Ms. Guerra to teach the 3-hour Legal Standards course.

This course “Ethical Aspects of Trauma and Substance Use Treatment” and the trainer, Ana Guerra have been approved by the Addiction Professionals Certification Board of NJ. This course, provided by Behavioral Health Matters, approval #403061125REC5s is approved for 5 continuing education credit hours by the APCBNJ. Credentials issued by the APCBNJ, the NJ Board of Marriage and Family Therapy Examiners and the NJ Board of Social Work Examiners recognize such courses. This 5 CE course is approved for social work continuing education hours in accordance with N.J.A.C. 13:44G-6.4c12.

Participants must be present for the duration of event, answer all roll calls and complete a Course Evaluation to be eligible for a Certificate of Completion that will be sent via email within 2 weeks.

CANCELLATION POLICY:
Registration is not complete and space is not reserved until payment is processed and you receive a second confirmation email from BHM. Please provide a reliable/valid email and phone # when registering. If you are unable to attend a training event, you must notify BHM promptly. ALL cancellation notifications must be made via email: contact@behavioralhealthmatters.com; type “Refund Request” in the subject line. The refund request email must be submitted ONE WEEK (7 DAYS) PRIOR TO DATE OF EVENT. After such a date, cancellations, "no-shows", log-in issues, email access issues*, full/partial attendance, etc. will NOT be eligible for a refund. ALL REFUNDS ARE SUBJECT TO A $15.00 (FIFTEEN DOLLAR) PROCESSING FEE. Substitutions are not allowed for virtual courses.
